Market Impact

• 31.7 million people above 65 years are affected by Xerostomia in India, out of which 24 million are females and 7.7 million are males.
• In males, 30% of all cancers are Head and neck cancers & in females the rate is around 11%. More than 2,00,000 new cases are being reported every year in India.
• The tobacco-related cancers for males are estimated to go up from 190,244 in the year 2010 to 225,241 in the year 2020. Similarly, the female cases will go up from 75,289 in year 2010 to 93,563 in the year 2020.

How we identified this as a major issue

Dry mouth is a condition in which permanent or temporary dysfunction of salivary glands occur due to medical disorders like Sjogren's syndrome, severe diabetes and as a side effect of treatments such as Radiotherapy for Head and neck cancers, poly drug therapy etc. 100% of Radiotherapy patients and Sjogren's patients experience dry mouth. The effects are gum diseases, tooth decay, difficulty in wearing dentures and in speech and swallowing, halitosis & frequent occurrence of oral microbial infections.

Besides the alternatives, patients depend mostly on frequent intake of water, which results in frequent urination during night leading to sleep disturbances. It is estimated that more than 30 million people who are above 65 yrs suffer from Xerostomia. In India, 30% of all cancers are H&N cancers. Over 2,00,000 new cases are reported every year. Globally 77 million suffer from Sjogren's syndrome and more affected are females.
